City of Sugar Hill Gary Pirkle Park Turf Surface utilized by over 1,000 athletes, coaches, officials, and staff for national 7 on 7 tournament

SUGAR HILL — The North Gwinnett National Select 7-on-7 Qualifier high school football event is sporting a different look in its second edition from the inaugural event a year ago.

For one thing, there was a new venue — moving across town from the natural grass fields of E.E. Robinson Park to the new artificial turf fields at Gary Pirkle Park for Thursday’s pool play.

“This is awesome,” North coach Bob Sphire said. “The mayor and the City Council of Sugar Hill are great to work with.

“You’ve got ample room. You’ve got four fields going on at the same time. You’ve got warm-up areas. You’ve still got room for teams to have their team areas. ... You couldn’t ask for a better situation than this.

“It’s really nice having all this in the general area. It’s almost like a Civil War battle. You hear a roar going on over there and a roar going on over here 15 minutes later.”

For another, the 16-team field had more local flavor, with 13 teams — including three from host North Gwinnett — from within the state of Georgia, including fellow Gwinnett programs Central Gwinnett, Grayson, Norcross and Shiloh.

But the common theme between the two tournaments is the competitiveness and athleticism displayed by all the participants.

“For us, it’s a great event to work on our pass defense, as well as our pass offense,” Grayson coach Mickey Conn said. “It’s an opportunity to compete. When you’re in the middle of summer like this, you’re lifting weights, you’re running, you’re doing all those things.

“Coming to a passing tournament where they keep score ... and all that, it gives kids an opportunity to compete and to win.”

Of course, the benefits of participating in this and other 7-on-7 tournaments go beyond wins and losses for the players and coaches.

“Usually, we do about three or four of these in the month of June,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said. “We taper off in July and just work on our stuff and get back to real football.

“It’s not real football, but it is about timing and quarterbacks and receivers running routes and just competing to see who can do one-on-one stuff. ... Just to come out and have fun and let the kids run around and do some good things. But you come to these things, and you want to win them.”

And, of course, there is an actual goal that the winner will achieve — a berth to join the host Bulldogs in the National Select 7-on-7 tournament next month in Hoover, Ala.

“We get to go to Hoover every year because we host this,” Sphire said. “So we get to play against the (powerhouses like) Don Bosco (of New Jersey) and the Evangel Christians (of Louisiana) and teams like that across the country that year in and year out are potential mythical national champions. You can’t simulate that against your own team.”

After earning seeds from Thursday’s pool play, elimination bracket play begins today at 10 a.m.

Mississippi powerhouse Olive Branch won a three-way tie-breaker with South Carolina Class AAAA quarterfinalist Spartanburg and Norcross to earn the No. 1 seed after all three teams finished the day at 5-1.

North Gwinnett’s A team went 4-2 and won a tie-breaker with Gainesville for the No. 4 seed.

Other seeds for Gwinnett teams include Grayson (3-2-1) at No. 7, Central (2-3-1) at No. 12 and Shiloh (1-5) at No. 14.
