a picture Deluxe Athletics is proud to be the general contractor that was chosen for the reconstruction of the practice facilities utilized by the Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. The project, awarded at the end of 2010, consists of the removal and replacement of their existing indoor synthetic surface which was completed in Phase 1 with a 61 ounce face weight monofilament fiber system with a sand/rubber infill mix. Other aspects of the project involve the outdoor facility’s current synthetic and natural grass fields. Phase 1 of the project started under a tight time frame on January 30, 2011 when the Steelers left for the Super Bowl, and a mandatory completion of March 6, 2011 to allow for the Pitt Panthers to have their Pro Day for all 32 NFL teams. The project was completed and signed off on March 1, 2011, five days ahead of schedule.

Notes Chris Daniluk, President of Deluxe Athletics, “We were extremely proud not only to be selected for this prestigious project, but to perform to the high standards the organizations require. Any time you have the opportunity to work with an NFL or NCAA organization to showcase your abilities, it is an honor for the entire company. For a project to be utilized by two historic organizations definitely increases our pride, and they, like every other client we work with, received the best our team of experienced personnel has to offer.”

As Chris Lasala, Director of Football Operations for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers stated,” I had the pleasure to work with the crew from Deluxe on a recent installation of a practice field for our shared Indoor Practice Facility with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Through the process, they have communicated clearly and professionally and have met every target date promptly. Any issues that have arisen have been communicated in a timely fashion and addressed promptly. The staff has been professional at all times and very detailed in their efforts to install a surface that is important to the success of our football program. It is a pleasure to work with Chris Daniluk and his installation team from Deluxe.”

Overview
The UPMC Sports Performance Complex is home to the world-renowned UPMC Center for Sports Medicine as well as the state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor training facilities of the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers football teams. The $40-million complex is sprawled across a half-mile stretch of land along the Monongahela River where a shuttered steel mill once stood. Completed in 2000, the complex is an exciting part of Pittsburgh’s South Side riverfront revitalization.
Indoor Practice/Training Facility
The 125,000-square-foot building houses a full-size football practice field surrounded by a running track and a separate training/conditioning area used by the Steelers and Panthers as well as individual athletes working with the UPMC Sports Performance Program staff.
Steelers and Panthers Building
The 100,000-square-foot indoor headquarters for the Steelers and Panthers is split in half, equally divided for both teams and kept separate due to national athletic rules. Inside are rooms for coaching, practice, game film reviewing, athletic training, weight training and conditioning, team meetings and relaxing, and a cafeteria serving healthy meals for players and staff. Outside are four side-by-side, 80-foot-long practice football fields made of natural grass. A must-stop on this tour is the Rooney Library, where the Steelers’ unprecedented six Super Bowl trophies are on display.
